How to Remove Wallpaper from Drywall

Wallpaper removal is one of the easiest DIY projects you can do on your own. But can also turn out to be challenging, especially if you do not know the right procedure. Fortunately, you do not have to hire a professional to remove the wallpaper for you. Read on for the basic steps involved in stripping wallpaper and ensuring that your walls remain intact.

1. Clear your working space

Move any furniture away from the wall so that you have ample working space. Put chairs, tables, and cupboards at the center of the room and cover the floor and furniture with a drop cloth.

2. Put off the electricity.

And also cover switches with painter’s tape. You will be working with water and could be at risk once it comes into contact with your power connection.

3. Peel off

Peel the wallpaper from the edges. Use a putty knife to scrape to find a beginning point to peel. In this process, the aim is to remove the outer layer.

In some cases, depending on which wallpaper was used, it may just peel off completely, making your work very simple.

4. Score the wallpaper

A scoring tool will come in handy for this stage. Score gently to remove the paper and use light pressure to prevent damaging your sheetrock or wallpaper.

5. Apply hot water water

You notice that once you peel, the wallpaper does not come out entirely. You are left with many patches of leftover paper.

Spray a water solution on your surface to allow the paper to come out. However, since you are working on drywall, ensure that you use a small amount of water as excessive moisture is disastrous to the drywall.

6. Remove adhesive

When the wallpaper is removed, a layer of adhesive remains on your wall. To get rid of it, spray your water solution over the entire wall, scrape off using a putty knife, then wash your walls with a sponge.

NOTE: You shouldn’t leave moisture on drywall for over 15 minutes.

Steam Clean

If the above process does not seem to work with your wallpaper, try out steaming. It is tedious as it requires you to hold a steamer and scrape the wallpaper simultaneously. Here you will need a helping hand.
